The I2P project was formed in 2003 to support the efforts of those trying to build a more free society by offering them an uncensorable, anonymous, and secure communication system. I2P is a development effort producing a low latency, fully distributed, autonomous, scalable, anonymous, resilient, and secure network.

I2P is a Distributed Peer to Peer Anonymous Network Layer. It allows you to send data between computers running I2P anonymously with multilayer end to end encryption. I2P derived from IIP (Invisible IRC Project) which was one of FreeNet's sister projects. I2P focuses on exclusively internal communication and not proxying to the regular Internet. The I2P network provides strong privacy protections for communication over the Internet. All communications over I2P network are anonymous and end-to-end encrypted, participants don't reveal their real IP addresses. I2P is an anonymous network on top of the internet. Using it you enjoy (almost?) perfect anonymity, but this comes at the cost of the network being comparably slow. While it is technically possible to reach the regular internet via I2P using a proxy in I2P that lets you connect anonymously "to the outside" (similar to Tor), this isn't done much RetroShare is designed to build a private network of trusted peers, while I2P is designed to be a large-scaled public anonymous network. Recent versions of RetroShare have options to run as a public "darknet" by using I2P or Tor as a transport. That way all connections are anonymized and no trust is required for adding new "friends". I2P, short for the Invisible Internet Project, is an anonymous network built on top of the Internet. It provides its users with a secure network infrastructure within which they can freely communicate and share data both privately and anonymously. I2P takes a web-based approach to facilitate communication security, allowing users to chat in an environment that is protected by several dedicated layers. The whole architecture is provided by a Safe and Secure, just Anonymous Filesharing.
