I purchased this 3TB Network Attached drive on 08-30-2011. It is still working. My only issue is that it is not big enough and I kinda keep waiting for it to die so that I can buy another bigger network drive from western digital.

If the new WD My Book 1230 does not work and the other one, which you stated uis identical does, then you should contact Western Digital support or consider returning the device to the vendor. Just connecting the new identical product to the usb ports and windows having issues with it compared to the other one means that the issue is external.
